Aggressive nature and indulging oneself in brawling is another attitude I have dealt with. A boy of class 11th  often depicted such characteristics. When I talked to him, I realized that he just needed more attention and affection. Merely weilding a lash on him was no solution and the need is to guide and encourage him. In a very polite manner I tried to solve his perennial problems that had always buckled him.

You have use the right approach. Also, give him opportunities to be the leader in small ways. Have him read out in the class or take part in a discussion. Give him some attention. Most of the rowdy students just need attention and appreciation.
